The TRIBE7 BLACKWING7 T-Transient lenses are state-of-the-art Full Frame spherical prime lenses designed by Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Bradford Young and former ARRI executive Neil Fanthom, representing a radically new concept in the world of cinema optics: the first tunable cinema lenses on the market. Each focal length is available in three tuning options — S (Straight), T (Transient), and X (Expressive) —, which allow parameters such as sharpness, contrast, roll-off, spherical aberration, field curvature, edge halation, and flare to be configured, in a way analogous to how an equaliser controls the frequency spectrum in music production. The set we offer corresponds to the T-Transient tuning: the midpoint between the neutrality of the S and the extreme expressiveness of the X.
Inspired by the legendary thorium effect — the radioactive mineral used in the manufacture of optical glass in the 1950s and 60s that gave lenses a unique amber tone and unparalleled flares —, the BLACKWING7 lenses revive that effect through an updated, non-radioactive formulation in the form of a «skin» that wraps the glass and gives the image a warm, organic, and entirely unique character. With a uniform 104mm front diameter across the full set, a 14-blade non-linear iris, and 270° of focus rotation, these lenses are technically precise and artistically unique.
